The Pentagon Has Fallen
The things labeled "fear-mongering" about Chinese entanglement with the United States Military are in reality vastly understated.
Since Republicans gained control of the House and its accompanying investigative committees in 2023, the tenor of the House has noticeably shifted from activism to accountability (whether TV news shows it or not).
One of those investigations centers around influence of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) at American universities and DOD funding for schools with Confucius Institutes (CI) or other CCP-linked entities.
The existential threat of the modern Communist Party of China has been well-documented and warned about, even by the Council on Foreign Relations, as far back as 2006.
As recently as 2021, the Biden-led Department of Defense mass-banned a slew of Chinese companies for their ties to the Chinese military.
For example, China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation Limited, or CASIC, was directly in business at the turn of the millenium with the predecessor to the American election company called Konnech.
China Electronics Technology Group has been directly in business with Microsoft since 2016 through a subsidiary.
With regard to the magnitude and scope of the codependency between the U.S. and China, it stands to reason that their militaries have also now become comingled.
There is one computer scientist from Michigan State in particular, whom I uncovered in the course of a completely separate investigation from what I was working on at the time.
Did I Find a Chinese Asset!?
Before we even start, the easy answer is admittedly,
“I don’t know.”
There is likely no way to confirm this finding from the open-sourced world, short of blowing any cover I may have because of several strategically placed FOIA requests.
All of that said, the evidence remains quite compelling.
China announced in late 2008 a new round of their recycled “Thousand Talents” state-sponsored talent recruitment programs.
Michigan State Univsersity Department of Computer Science and Engineering Professor Anil Jain has been working on Department of Defense biometrics projects at MSU, directly, since at least 2006.
The Department of Justice got in on the action through their National Institute of Justice beginning in 2007.
In 2008, Jain developed a revolutionary technology to identify marks, scars, tattoos and to match them to a database in order to identify victims and suspects.
This was undoubtedly a monumental achievement worthy of interest from the Chinese.
As I’ve covered extensively, the Chinese Academy of Sciences has had a direct line into Michigan State in one form or another since at least 1998.
Jain’s tattoo recognition platform was verifiably worthy of notice from the Pentagon, as they issued a grant for Jain and MSU Professor Rong Jin (who is now senior development staff at Alibaba) in 2008.
Thousands of Talents
This was around the time the Chinese started organizing their “Thousand Talents Plan” to launch in 2008.
Here are the qualifications for which, as you will see, Anil Jain appears to qualify.
The FBI, DOJ, Pentagon, and National Science Foundation all doubled down on Michigan State’s Computer Science Department from there on, even later incorporating the private sector with Cogent Systems.
You can read all about that in my not-an-article that rattles off the department’s research grant history, sourced only from MSU’s website.
There are surely more grants in the ether, but these were the most readily accessible and the list is extensive.
These are images from only 2009:
Tsinghua University - the School *Real* Michiganders Choose
The only problem arising from this is that in June of 2009, Anil Jain joined the faculty as a Guest Professor at People’s Republic of China Chairman Xi Xinping’s alma mater, Tsinghua University…for a three-year appointment.
If you’ll recall, the “Thousand Talents Program” carried a minimum requirement for all foreign experts to work in China no less than three years, whether for at least two months, or for no less than nine months per year.
Also recall that the translated version of the announcement (if you opened the .pdf) established a focus of the plan to be between 5 and 10 years.
Anil Jain was named to the Chinese Academy of Sciences for his contributions to China in his field of science in 2019 — 10 years after his employment at Tsinghua University — yet continued receiving DoD and U.S. government-sponsored grants and helping to spearhead the entire CITeR Lab.
More Academy of Sciences
What’s more, is that it’s no abnormality for American academia to behave in this manner, nor for the Pentagon to enable it, and even endorse it.
Take, for example, Carnegie Mellon University during this same time period, and its Dean of the time, Subra Suresh. He was a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and was running the university charged with the CERT taskforce, as I’ve written before.
CERT’s primary responsibility is to detect methods of malicious cyber-intrusions and to develop ways to combat them.
It seems strange that a leader of the hostile state actors on the international cybercrime front would be leading the university tasked with securing the entire nation’s critical infrastructure.
And also seems strange to have this type of compromise leading the charge on AI, as we now learn its real-life implications in real-time as it is rolled out.
Without any legislative guardrails, watching the AI social experiment roll out on the smallest, weakest, most malleable among us — children — is utterly alarming.
If You’re Numb to This News, You Were Supposed To Be
So why is it important that the Chinese Academy of Sciences is burrowed into Michigan State’s computer science department?
Why is it important that the Chinese Academy of Sciences were burrowed into CISA and DHS at the critical point in development of our cybersecurity and AI infrastructure (or anything else that touched CMU between 2013-2017)?
Why is it important that the Chinese Academy of Sciences is also intertwined with Silicon Valley?
Why is it important that the Chinese Academy of Sciences is also intertwined with Microsoft — in a business partnership?
Why is it important that the Financial Advisor to the President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences was one of the many spearheads of the progression and technological success of an American election company called Konnech?
Because the Chinese Academy of Sciences also operates the Wuhan Institute of Virology, for which you need look no further than the web address to verify.
How much more will it take to admit the United States is under attack and has been for over a decade?
How long until we admit that there are no party lines in this battle? It is the aristocracy against everyone else.
How much more until the dam breaks and washes everyone downstream. We need to plug the dam while there is time left, if for no other reason than to come up with a creative, comprehensive, effective, and tamper-proof plan, to remove the entire administrative state’s opinion on the matter.
Contact your U.S. Representatives and have them make sure that Rep. Jim Banks (IN) and Rep. Pat Fallon (TX) hear about this.
I do think it’s time to leave this feedback loop, don’t you?
Well, the State Dept with its CIA arm and the DOD are the two departments that run our government so it is not a total surprise that they along with China are co-conspirators in the take-down of the US by all means necessary. Nice work Gus.
